High Holidays

Happy New Year! This holiday marks the beginning of the Jewish year. It is a time of joy and celebration - of blowing the shofar to alert everyone to this important holiday- and of eating sweets like apples and honey in hopes of a sweet year. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. Jewish people fast on this day and consider those we have wronged, admit to ourselves that mistakes have been made, and decide to make some necessary changes for the new year. By the end of the day, we should feel completely rejuvenated and ready to embrace the possibilites of a new year.

We begin the High Holiday period with Selichot. Selichot is a hebrew word for forgiveness and refers to the special penitential prayers recited by Jews during the High Holiday season.  The S'lichot liturgy contains some of the finest Jewish religious poetry ever composed.

Selichot takes place on Saturday, September 4th, 2010. Join us for dessert and watch the movie "The Confession."  A service will take place after the movie.

Erev Rosh Hashanah this year is September 8, 2010. Rosh Hashanah is September 9th and 10th, 2010.

Congregation Beth Or celebrates two days of Rosh Hashanah. There are early and late adult service times for you to choose. Family services are held in the afternoon.  If you attend the early adult Rosh Hashanah service, you can send your elementary age children to youth services.  Babysitting is provided for younger children.  For our preschool age children, Tot Holiday services are also held in the afternoon.

Erev Yom Kippur this year is September 17th and Yom Kippur is September 18th, 2010. Click here for the Yom Kippur Text Study topics.  We offer early and late adult service times for Yom Kippur as well. You must attend the same service time for both holidays.

Please refer to the high holiday information you receive in the mail for dates and times.  Service times are also printed in the Beth Or News. If you have any questions, please call the office at 215-646-5806.
