From the Educator At Beth Or, we consider the educating of our children to be among our primary objectives. We seek to turn out sincere, committed and dedicated Jews in order to ensure the survival of the Jewish people and of our heritage. All children in Kindergarten, first and second grades attend school once a week on Sunday mornings. Students come to know the calendar cycle of holidays as well as ceremonies, symbols and reasons for celebration. They learn about their relationship to the greater Jewish world - the family, the synagogue, the community and God. Incorporated into their programs are art, music, Hebrew and blessings. Students in third through sixth grades attend school on Sunday mornings for Judaic Studies as well as mid-week on either Monday or Tuesday for Hebrew and tefillah (worship). In Judaic studies, students learn about the concepts of God and holiness; study Torah through the text and apply its ancient lessons to their own lives; get connected to the Land of Israel by learning about its people and customs; become acquainted with the journey of the Jewish people throughout history; learn how we make our lives holy by the ritual observance of Shabbat, the festivals and the major events of a Jewish lifetime; study the history and heroes of the Holocaust; and all the while we will be celebrating the Jewish holidays together as they occur throughout the school year! In our Hebrew studies program, students learn Hebrew through prayer; they will learn to decode Hebrew and understand the major prayers in the Shabbat morning and Friday evening service; learn key roots and vocabulary of the prayers; and understand the relevance and importance of the prayers and the ethical values associated with each one. The Academy program is for students in grades seven, eight, nine, and ten. Most of our students meet on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00; others choose from among several learning "tracks". In addition to our regular teaching staff, the clergy figure prominently as teachers in our Academy program. Cantor Green teaches eighth and ninth grade students and Rabbi Marx and Rabbi Axler co-teach the tenth grade Confirmation class along with Susan Edelstein. Tenth grade culminates with a special Confirmation Service on Shavuot. Jewish Education is a partnership. It is a unique and holy relationship between home and school, between parents, children and teachers. We believe that the synagogue and school are both important aspects of a child's Jewish learning experience.
