Introduction We are pleased to be able to present to you a large variety of adult education offerings this spring. There are many classes, special events and ongoing study opportunities. We hope you take advantage of those that seem of interest, and bring a friend with you - it's always better to study together. RSVP for all classes to Barbara Murtha at bmurtha@bethor.org April Classes Lunch & Learn: Lesser Known Historical Events That Shape Our Jewish Values (4/28 at Beth Or at 12 noon) - Study four major movements that shaped the Jewish people and indirectly the Western Hemisphere. These events transformed the Middle East, the Roman Empire, Europe & America. COme & Explore the details of these events from a Jewish perspective. History sometimes turns quickly & decisively. Our Jewish circumstances and the political realities of today were shaped by four bold events, that are poorly understood. Together, we will study the details and uncover the significance of: King David Conquering Jerusalem; The Christianization of the Roman Empire; The Chmielnitsky Pograms of the 1600's & The Reforming of Judaism in the late 1800's. Lunch & Learn: Lesser Known Heroes of the Jewish Bible (4/24 at 12 noon at Beth Or) - In each class, we will explore a lesser-known character whose story in the TaNaKh is filled with rich meaning & potential. There are so many individuals through the course of Jewish history whoe contributions were made without fanfare, or (at times) even recognition. Each session will include a glimpse of the character in their original setting and through the lens of Midrash and commentary as well as modern interpretation. Come for one session or all four. Each session is an independent whole and one need not complete the entire series in order to draw meaning from an individual session. Psalms (4/29, 5/6, 513, & 5/20 at 7:30 pm)- The Psalms have been called "the original liturgy of the People of Israel." Many are familiar to us through use in prayer & at life cycle events. Yet, the subtle structures and wide ranging themes of the entire book of Psalms is a topic so rich and deep that few of us have even scratched the surface. We will examine the Psalms for their poetic structure, their original historical setting, and through the lens of thousands of years of Jewish interpretation. We will also consider how Jews have connected to Psalms in time of difficulty and illness, and in times of celebration and praise. We will examine some of the Hebrew text, but translation will be provided and Hebrew is not a prerequisite. It is our hope that you will find some opportunity for Lifelong Jewish Learning.
